Boumsong has been called up as a direct replacement for fellow Auxerre player and friend Mexes, but hopes he can do enough to be called alongside the defender next time.
"It is a great satisfaction," said Boumsong. "I am extremely happy.
"I am sad for Philippe because it is always hard not being able to take up a squad place when you have been selected.
"But one day I hope to be selected alongside him.
"Philippe is already an established member of the national squad and I hope to imitate him in the next few months.
"I don't really consider this call-up as a sign that I have made it."
Meanwhile, Djibril Cisse is still angling for a move to England or Spain, again ruling out a move within Le Championnat.
The Auxerre star has been told by his club that he is staying put, but still believes he would like to play in La Liga or The Premiership.
"I don't think Italy would suit me," said Cisse. "I would prefer England and Spain.
"It would be difficult for the coach to allow me to leave for another French team - plus I am contracted until 2007."
