Auxerre coach Guy Roux has said he wants Mohamed Lamine Sissoko to return to the club he left to join Valencia in the summer.
The 18-year-old midfielder was getting frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities at Auxerre, so opted for a move to Spain with Valencia.
But French rules state a player must sign his first professional contract with the club he was trained at.
Roux said: "We educated him, put him through school, gave him board and did his laundry. When we terminated his schoolboy contract, we offered him a trainee contract.
"An agent approached Sissoko when he was injured in February. He took him to Valencia to sign a pre-contract.
"We can't compete with the means of a club like Valencia, notably the player's agents' commissions.
"We don't want any money from Valencia, we just want the player.
"If we lose academy players at 18-years-old, without them having played a single match for the first team, we might as well close the academy now," said Roux.
