Marseille win first title in 18 years; Boulogne & Le Mans go down

Marseille clinched the French title with a 3-1 win over Rennes after rivals Auxerre lost 2-1 at Lyon. Marseille went into the game knowing a win would secure their first championship in 18 years after Auxerre slipped up at Lyon. The home side got off to a flying start when Gabriel Heinze fired them in front after just four minutes, but Jimmy Briand threatened to spoil the party with an equaliser before the break. Mamadou Niang restored Marseille's lead on 76 minutes and Lucho Gonzalez made sure of the title with a third two minutes later. The win means Marseille have an unassailable eight-point lead at the summit after Lyon came from behind to beat Auxerre. Ireneusz Jelen gave Auxerre the lead on 15 minutes, but Lisandro Lopez equalised from the penalty spot for Lyon in first-half stoppage time. Miralem Pjanic netted the winner for Lyon three minutes from time to boost their hopes of clinching a UEFA Champions League spot. Boulogne and Le Mans suffered relegation after losing to St Etienne and Le Mans respectively. St Etienne secured their survival and condemned Boulogne to a quick return to Ligue 2 after earning a 1-0 win in their relegation battle. Emmanuel Riviere scored the only goal of the game for St Etienne four minutes from time to ensure another season in the top flight for the visitors. Le Mans' fate was out of their hands as St Etienne needed just a point to stay up and their relegation was confirmed after a 3-2 defeat at Nancy. Julien Feret gave Nancy the lead on 18 minutes, but two goals in two minutes from Modibo Maiga (25), Mathieu Dossevi (27) turned the game in Le Mans' favour. However, Feret drew Nancy level five minutes later and Chris Malonga grabbed the winner just past the hour mark to send Le Mans down. Bordeaux are in danger of missing out on next season's Champions League after being held to a 1-1 draw away to Nice. Emersen Fae gave Nice the lead on 26 minutes, but last season's champions drew level seven minutes later thanks to a superb free-kick from Wendel. Lille boosted their chance of a Champions League spot with a 2-0 success at Toulouse. Goals from Yohan Cabaye (34) and Ludovic Obraniak (48) were enough to give Lille the points and send them into second spot. Montpellier climbed into fifth spot with a 1-0 victory at Sochaux, with Alberto Costa scoring the all-important goal 18 minutes from the end. Lorient twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Monaco. Lukman Haruna gave Monaco the lead on 41 minutes, but the advantage proved short-lived as Morgan Amalfitano equalised 60 seconds later. Ouwo Moussa Maazou restored Monaco's lead on 71 minutes only for Kevin Gameiro to earn Lorient a point with a leveller eight minutes later. Fahid Ben Khalfallah's last-gasp goal earned Valenciennes a 2-2 draw at PSG. Mevlut Erding fired PSG in front on the half hour, but Gaetan Bong replied for Valenciennes just before the hour. Mateja Kezman looked to have won it for PSG with his goal in the last minute, but Khalfallah popped up with an equaliser two minutes into injury-time. Already-relegated Grenoble picked up a 1-1 draw at Lens. Laurent Courtois gave Grenoble the lead right on the stroke of half-time, but Toifilou Maoulida equalised for Lens on 68 minutes.
