Monaco won 3-0 at Nancy to end the day as they began it, three points clear at the Ligue 1 summit.
Title rivals Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Bastia 5-0 earlier on Saturday but Leonardo Jardim's side found just the response they required as Bernardo Silva and Thomas Lemar added to Tobias Badila's own goal.
PSG, who lost to Nice last time out, had stepped up the pressure as quickfire goals from Lucas Moura and Marco Verratti sparked a rout of the league's bottom club. Verratti's strike came in controversial circumstances, with Bastia keeper Jean-Louis Leca out of position checking on injured PSG midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Edinson Cavani bagged his 32nd and 33rd goals of the campaign as well as missing a penalty, while defender Marquinhos scored PSG's fourth.
Monaco knew they would still have a game in hand even after the clash with Nancy, and they were soon in front when Badila deflected Valere Germain's cross into his own net. Lemar crossed for Silva to score just before half-time and then added a late third himself.
Nancy remained 19th, three points adrift of safety, with Bastia a point worse off and both teams nursing damage to their respective goal differences.
Dijon's survival hopes took a similar blow with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Guingamp.
Two goals apiece from Jimmy Briand and Yannis Salibur dropped Dijon into the relegation zone ahead of next Sunday's vital clash with Nancy.
Ivan Santini scored the only goal as Caen beat Toulouse to climb out of the drop zone, while Lorient slipped to 17th but earned a much-needed point as they drew 1-1 with Angers.
Romain Philippoteaux gave Bernard Casoni's men the lead and though Vincent Manceau equalised for the visitors, the result left Lorient two points above Dijon.
Metz are safe after winning 2-0 at Lille with goals from Georges Mandjeck and Renaud Cohade.
