The Belgian has been training with the club for several months and is likely to sign a contract for the rest of the season with the option of another two years.
Nice boss Gernot Rohr has chosen Leonard rather than make a move for former Newcastle man Laurent Charvet.
The 29-year-old, who has been a free-agent since the summer, was also wanted by Metz and former club Standard Liege but has elected to move to Nice instead.
"I think I will sign for the team before Sunday," stated Leonard.
Meanwhile, the French club may also be in the market for a new forward if Abdelmalek Charrad leaves.
The Algerian is thought to be attracting the attention of Toulouse, Lille and Strasbourg.
