The Turks knew that Lazio had to win, and their game plan was to frustrate. For long periods it worked, and before Stankovic scored they were the better side, but Alberto Zaccheroni`s men proved their resilience as they battled away and were rewarded with a wonder goal.
Stankovic decided to single-handedly haul his side back in to Champions League contention, as he strode forward before unleashing a rocked that beat Farid Mondragon to hand the Italians all three points.
They remain bottom of Group D, but are in with a chance of qualification after Nantes held PSV to a 0-0 draw at the Philips Stadion.
This game was a real battle of few chances, with both teams aware that a defeat would leave them with a mountain to climb to secure qualification, and it came as no surprise that the deadlock was not broken.
PSV striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had the best chance to claim the points, but his header was scrambled off the line by the French defence.
Frederic da Rocha created a good chance for Nantes, but his drive was well saved by Patrick Lodewijks.
A point apiece keeps Nantes at the top of the group, while PSV are also still in contention with next week`s encounters sure to be tense affairs.
