The Romanian hit-man was called to the bench just minutes before kick-off and told he was ineligible to feature against Rennes.
The Nantes officials realised their administrative blunder minutes from the start of the game, after discovering that Moldovan's papers were only valid until March 16.
''We knew he was qualified, he had valid papers for a while, but we did not send a residence permit photocopy to the league until June 30,'' confirmed sports director Robert Budzynski.
''Consequently, as the reservations were made in the last seconds, we didn't have the papers.''
Whilst Moldovan admitted that he was surprised at how the situation was allowed to occur, he did have kind words for his replacement Marama Vahirua.
''I didn't really understand what happened,'' admitted Moldovan.
''I was already doubtful for the match, so it is not too serious. We are now in the semi-final and I am happy for Marama Vahirua who needed that goal.''
