Bordeaux take title as Caen and Nantes suffer relegation woe

Bordeaux were crowned Ligue 1 champions as Caen and Nantes were relegated and St Etienne climbed out of the drop zone. Bordeaux needed just a point from their trip to Caen to be sure of the title but claimed all three with a 1-0 victory which saw the hosts slide into the bottom three. Yoan Gouffran nodded home from close range following Benont Tremoulinas' free-kick four minutes after the interval to seal their first league crown in 10 years. Marseille were the only side who could overtake Bordeaux, but their resounding 4-0 home success against Rennes saw them end the season three points back. Three goals in seven second half minutes from Bakari Kone (two) and Mamadou Niang put the hosts in control, with Niang adding a fourth in the 69th minute. St Etienne scrambled away from danger on the final day with a thumping 4-0 victory at home to Valenciennes. Ilan opened the scoring in the 13th minute before a rapid second-half brace from Bafetimbi Gomis and Kevin Maralas' strike sparked relieved celebrations at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. Nantes needed a miracle to stay up and could not climb out of the bottom three despite their 2-1 victory against Auxerre. Ivan Klasnic gave the home side an 11th-minute advantage, with Mamadou Bagayoko restoring their advantage soon after Jeremy Berthod's leveller early in the second half. Le Havre, whose relegation was confirmed well before the end of the season, ended their campaign with a 0-0 draw away to Nice. Sochaux made sure that they will still be in Ligue 1 next season courtesy of a 1-0 triumph away to Grenoble as Mevlut Erdinc found the net three minutes before the interval. Le Mans also staved off any relegation fears with a 1-1 draw at Lorient where Thorstein Helstad's opener was cancelled out by Michael Ciani. Outgoing champions Lyon, who had enjoyed an astonishing seven successive Ligue 1 titles, ended the season in third spot after a 0-0 draw at fourth-placed Toulouse, where John Mensah saw red in the first half. Lyon will enter the UEFA Champions League at the qualifying stage while Toulouse go into the Europa League, the new-look Uefa Cup. Lille emerged victorious from their five-goal thriller against Nancy and climbed into fifth to secure continental competition with Nicolas Plestan scoring the winner 16 minutes from time. Robert Vittek and Adil Rami put Lille 2-0 up after just 11 minutes only for the visitors to restore parity thanks to goals from Abdeslam Ouaddou and Youssouf Hadji either side of the interval. Paris St Germain ended the term in sixth and missed out on the Europa League following their 0-0 draw with Monaco at the Parc des Princes.
