The Spanish top-flight season finished in dramatic style, with Real Madrid holding on to their final day advantage to beat Barcelona to the crown.

But who have been the stand out players in 2016/17? Here, Revista regulars Guillem Balague and Gaizka Mendieta, as well as host David Garrido, select their best XIs...

DEFENCE

First of all you have to talk of Jan Oblak as, for me, he is the goalkeeper of the season. While they are a defensive side, he's saved Atletico so many times.

The full-backs, Dani Carvajal and Marcelo, are the best in the world at the moment, perhaps only Alex Sandro and Dani Alves come close. They are so good going forward.

Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti are my centre-backs - Barcelona have not defended so well as a team but both of them have saved Luis Enrique's side on multiple occasions.

MIDFIELD

You need someone from Real Sociedad, who have had a wonderful season, in there and Asier Illarramendi has reached his potential again after his disappointing time at Real Madrid. Again, someone has to be there from Sevilla, and Steven N'Zonzi has impressed - meaning there is no space for Vitolo.

ATTACK

Lionel Messi and Neymar - both of them statistically have been key in terms of influence - and are obvious choices. Isco also makes the team. He hasn't played every single game but he's been so important for Real Madrid. Meanwhile, at Atletico Madrid, Antoine Griezmann has continued to score important goals when others haven't.

DEFENCE

It's been difficult to choose! Sergio Asenjo, after the injuries he's had, he's come back and his season has been amazing and key for Villarreal.

With the full-backs, I've agreed with Guillem - it's hard to find two who defend and support midfielders the way Carvajal and Marcelo do offensively.

Pique has been key for Barcelona. Umtiti has also been important but Diego Godin, in a season when Atletico have not been as good defensively as they have in the past, he's still the leadership in that team.

MIDFIELD

Andres Iniesta has been so influential and whenever he's in the Barcelona team he makes a difference to the squad. In terms of my other midfielders, Manu Trigueros for Villarreal has been very impressive this season, very consistent throughout the season, and Toni Kroos has helped get the balance right for Real Madrid.

ATTACK

The front three, for the numbers and the goals and the way they lead this Barcelona team are Neymar, Messi and Luis Suarez. For me it's the best front three you can have in the world.

DEFENCE

Asenjo was having a superb season until suffering a terribly unfortunate fourth ACL injury of his career, and that stubbornness was the basis of Villarreal's season. The back four are almost unquestionable: Marcelo has contributed 10 assists, Carvajal has been as solid as ever, Pique has once again shown his leadership qualities and Umtiti has been the one summer signing which HAS worked for Barcelona.

MIDFIELD

In midfield, Trigueros is the player who has kept Villarreal ticking over, a vital part of their transition between defence and attack, he has vision and an eye for the spectacular. Marcos Llorente has had a brilliant campaign at Alaves, with the most ball recoveries of any player in La Liga and I'm sure he'll return to Real Madrid to challenge Casemiro for that place as holding midfielder next season.

ATTACK

Iago Aspas has almost single-handedly dragged Celta through a 60-game season including semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and Europa League, scoring 25 goals along the way. Messi has scored at more than a goal a game and also been so decisive, often in the final minutes, as he was in the second Clasico of the season, but overall from a deeper position on the pitch - these days, he's practically a midfielder.

Isco has shown his worth in the latter part of this season in particular, often having that magic that will unlock a tight game and he's laid on his fair share of assists as well - all this despite plenty of speculation over his contract and future at Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo started off the season injured, but along with strong management from Zinedine Zidane and his own high professional standards, he's finished this season like a train, especially in Europe, now in the position of striker rather than wide left.
