La Liga round-up: Kevin Gameiro ends goal drought in Atletico Madrid victory

Kevin Gameiro

Kevin Gameiro claimed his first goal of the campaign as Atletico Madrid continued their unbeaten start to the La Liga season with a 1-0 success at Celta Vigo.

France striker Gameiro hooked home from close range in the 28th minute at Balaidos after Celta's defence failed to deal with Saul's right-wing corner.

Celta were unlucky not to take something from the game and Iago Aspas twice came close to an equaliser.

The former Liverpool forward had a volley denied by a fine save from Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak early in the second period before rattling the crossbar with a free-kick minutes later.

Earlier in the day, sixth-placed Villarreal scored four second-half goals to thump struggling Las Palmas 4-0.

Congolese forward Cedric Bakambu powered into the roof of the net to open the scoring from a tight angle three minutes after the restart before Mario Gaspar's low drive from the edge of the box doubled the lead in the 65th minute.

An own goal from Ximo Navarro put the result beyond doubt two minutes later and Italian forward Nicola Sansone sealed a comprehensive victory in stoppage time by tapping in Denis Cheryshev's pass.
