Hamburg manager Martin Jol has admitted he is closely monitoring the situation and progress of Rafael van der Vaart at Real Madrid.
Dutch international Van der Vaart, who joined Real from Hamburg at the start of the season, admitted before Christmas that he was unhappy with the Spanish giants.
The midfield playmaker made a bright start to his career at Santiago Bernabeu before finding himself on the bench after the departure of Bernd Schuster and the subsequent appointment of Juande Ramos.
And Jol has hinted he would be ready to bring the Dutchman back to Hamburg if he decides to call time on his career in Spain.
Jol told Welt am Sonntag: "I am keeping tabs on Rafael's progress at Bernabeu.
"And I feel if Rafael thinks he has to leave Madrid to return to Bundesliga, his destination can only be HSV.
"We are really in touch with him and know how he feels, simply because of his close friendship to Joris Mathijsen.
"I am really feeling sorry for Rafael as a player. If he had stayed on with us, he could have become a club legend.
"Like Uwe Seeler or Kevin Keegan. There was no doubt about his importance for the club when he was at HSV."
