Jose Antonio Camacho's agent, Peter de Philip, was fuming after a deal was set-up to take the Brazilian youngster to the Lisbon outfit.
The Catalans' demand of é¼600,000 for the six-month loan shocked Benfica who were only prepared to stump up around half of that sum.
"There is a list of players that Camacho wants," de Philip explained. "But if the club want to try and sign good players for free then they had better forget it.
"If they do not have the money at the moment to sign the players then it is a waste of time making these lists."
Barca were keen to offload Geovanni in order to clear one of their four non-EU places in the squad.
