Javier Saviola had given Barca an early lead, but goalkeeper Valdes got himself sent off, and conceded a penalty, when he reacted with outrage to a dive by controversial Betis striker Dani.
It had all looked so much better for Frank Rijkaard's side when Saviola was brought down in the box just five minutes into the game.
The Argentine stepped up to take the penalty himself - and although Toni Prats saved from the spot, he could not block the follow up from the relieved striker.
However, when Dani took a dive in the box after negligible contact with a defender Valdes reacted furiously despite the referee Vicente Lizondo Cortes not giving the offence.
The custodian pushed Dani to the ground - and Cortes issued a red card and a penalty, to the delight of the home fans.
Perez Alfonso made no mistake from the resultant spot-kick, sending reserve goalkeeper Rustu Recber the wrong way and levelling the game.
To compound Barca's misery, Gerard was dismissed in stoppage time but neither side can have too much complaint about the result - which keeps Barca in fourth spot, and Betis in eleventh in La Liga.
