Barca in Baptista admission

Barcelona have admitted their interest in Sevilla's free-scoring Brazilian midfielder Julio Baptista.

The 23-year-old was - along with Barca's Ronaldinho - the revelation of the Spanish season, notching 20 goals as Sevilla qualified for Europe.

Baptista, who only moved to the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan last summer from Sao Paulo, has recently broken into the full Brazil squad on the back of his scintillating form this term, and scored twice for his country in their 5-2 win over a Catalan select XI earlier in the week - played at Camp Nou.

Barca are on the lookout for fresh midfield talent after Dutch duo Edgar Davids and Philip Cocu both announced they were unlikely to extend their stays at the club.

"He is a player that the coaches like a lot and when we have the chance we will take a decision on him, but we have not spoken to the president of Sevilla (Jose Maria del Nido)," stated Barca supremo Joan Laporta.

Sevilla have insisted they have no plans to sell Baptista whose buy-out clause stands at ‚é¼36 million (£25 million), but could be tempted to part with the South American should Barca offer big money for a player who cost them just ‚é¼2.75 (£1.8 million).
