Michael Owen marked his Real debut by creating the winning goal.Michael Owen marked his Real Madrid debut by creating the winning goal for his new team in a 1-0 win over Mallorca at Son Moix, after coming on in the first half for Raul.
The summer capture from Liverpool began the game on the bench, but was handed an early opportunity to impress Jose Antonio Camacho when Raul was forced to hobble off.
The visitors started the brighter of the sides and Luis Figo came close to opening the scoring, but Miguel Moya got down well to save the angled shot.
Mallorca were creating chances of their own and right back David Cortes, a target for Liverpool, was causing problems with his surging runs into the visitors' penalty area.
Owen was then given an early chance to shine when he came on after 25 minutes for captain Raul who appeared to be struggling with a hip injury.
Shortly after, another Cortes run caused panic for Real at the back but with Iker Casillas diving to make the save, Francesco Pavon was on hand to clear the danger.
Owen came close to a debut goal after 34 minutes, however his near-post header from Figo's right wing cross sailed into the side netting of Moya's goal.
Moments after the re-start former Reds striker Owen made his first contribution for Real by collecting a pass before chipping a delightful effort to the back post for Ronaldo to tap home.
Owen should have got his name on the score sheet shortly after, but following good work by David Beckham the striker scuffed his shot in the penalty area.
Casillas ensured the scores stayed level after 65 minutes when he dived bravely at the feel of Marco Vales after Andrija Delibasic headed the ball back across goal.
Despite not being at their majestic best, Real will be happy to begin the season with a win following a poor end to their last term where they set a new record for consecutive league defeats.
Barcelona got their campaign off to a winning start with an impressive 2-0 victory at Racing Santander.
Summer signings Ludovic Giuly and Samuel Eto'o marked their debuts with second half goals to give Barca the perfect start to the season.
Barca dominated from the start, but they were forced to wait until the second half to open the scoring.
Giuly finally did break the deadlock on 68 minutes with a simple finish from close-range.
Barca wrapped up the win with the second from the penalty spot from Eto'o after Xavi was felled in the area by Pablo Casar.
Seville began the season with a 1-0 home win over Albacete thanks to Renato's early second half goal.
Ian Harte almost gave Levante a dream start in the top flight, however Nihat Kahveci's goal after the interval ensured Real Sociedad bagged a share of the spoils.
Savo Milosevic's 40th minute equaliser gave Osasuna a point in a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao by cancelling out Joseba Exteberria's opener.
Jose Antonio gave Getafe a dream start at Real Zaragoza, but the newly promoted side ultimately crashed to a 3-1 defeat.
Alvaro levelled matters for the home side shortly after before a Savio strike fired Zaragoza ahead for the first time.
Alvaro's second after 69 minutes settled the contest and clinched an opening weekend win.
