Lucky break for Canizares

Santiago Canizares did not break his leg in Valencia's defeat at Villarreal.

Valencia have been given a boost with the news that goalkeeper Santiago Canizares has not broken a bone in his foot.

The Che suffered a miserable night on Sunday, losing to local rivals Villarreal 3-1 and finishing the derby with two players injured.

Midfielder Rufete was forced from pitch after just seven minutes, while Canizares had to leave the action 20 minutes from time.

As yet the full extent both injuries is not yet known, and more detailed tests are planned for Wednesday.

However, initial tests on Canizares have shown that he did not fracture a metatarsal bone in his left foot following the challenge with Villarreal's Diego Forlan that caused his injury.

"We have discarded the existence of a fracture," stated Valencia doctor Jorge Candel.

For his part, Rufete is thought to have picked up a hamstring complaint and the Primera outfit are hoping it will prove to be a strain and not a tear.
