The Brazilian, who saw his season decimated by a knee ligament injury last time around, underwent an operation to remove a cyst from the big toe on his left foot.
Doctors believe Motta may need further surgery to completely clear up the problem, meaning he could miss Barca's first game of the season at Alaves on the weekend of August 27/28.
He is expected to be sidelined for around three weeks after the second operation which would leave him a race against time to be fit for the Primera kick-off.
"The operation consisted of the removal of a cyst from the big toe of his left foot and the cleaning of the area which had become inflamed," Barca's medical staff explained.
The midfielder will be hoping the first operation proves a complete success having endured a frustrating time with injury in the past few months.
