The Brazilian-Italian midfielder underwent surgery on Monday to remove a cyst from under the nail of the big toe on his left foot and doctors will now wait and see how things go.
But the club's medical team said that he may require a further operation to completely clean up the area.
Motta pulled out of Barcelona's pre-season tour of Denmark to fly back to Catalunya for the operation and has been told that it could take up to three weeks before he can play again.
"The surgery allowed the removal of the cyst and to clean the area thoroughly," a club statement read.
Motta missed the majority of last season after picking up a serious knee injury in September, but he made it back to enjoy the title celebrations in the final weeks of the season.
