The derby contest at the Vicente Calderon was settled in the early stages, as Antonio Lopez's foul on Raul in the Atletico box gave Los Merengues a penalty.
Lopez was then harshly sent off by referee Benardino Gonzalez Vasquez for his indiscretion before Ronaldo stepped up to slot the spot kick home for a 1-0 half time lead.
