Athletic Bilbao are looking into re-signing striker Santiago Ezquerro on loan.Athletic Bilbao are studying the possibility of bringing former striker Santiago Ezquerro back to the club in January.
The Basque outfit are in turmoil at the moment having sacked manager Jose Luis Mendilibar earlier in the week and replaced him with Javier Clemente.
They are already having to contemplate the prospect of losing their top-flight status for the first time in their history as they currently prop up La Primera.
Scoring goals has been one of their main problems with the team having managed just ten in ten games, with three of those coming in their only win this term on the opening day of the season against Real Sociedad.
As a result, they are looking to bolster their forward-line and are now looking into the viability of bringing Ezquerro back to San Mames.
The hit-man left the club in rather acrimonious circumstances during the summer when he refused a contract extension to sign for Barcelona on a free transfer.
However, he has seen very little action since his switch to Camp Nou making a total of just four league appearances, all as a substitute.
The main stumbling block for Athletic is that Spanish league rules stipulate that players are ineligible to move in the January transfer window if they have made five or more league appearances for their club.
Athletic are understood to be hoping to persuade Barca to omit the player from league duty until the winter break at which point they would look to broker a loan deal until the end of the season.
Barca have not commented on the speculation, although director of sport Txiki Beguiristain recently insisted that the club were not looking to break up the squad.
