Barcelona beat Real Sociedad, while Sevilla put Real Madrid to the sword.
Ronaldinho was again the inspiration for Barcelona as his second half goal proved enough to secure a 1-0 over Real Sociedad.
Those inside Camp Nou had to wait until 16 minutes into the second half until they could salute their master, but when his goal arrived, it was good enough to cement Barca's place at the top of the table.
Barca ended the game with ten-men when Silvinho picked-up a pair of quick-fire bookings with just five minutes left on the block.
Ronaldinho had earlier gone close with a trademark overhead kick, while Barca had two goals disallowed for off-side.
When his goal arrived Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had no answer to a first time shot that beat him at his far post.
In Sunday night's other clash, David Beckham marked a rare start for Real Madrid with his side's goal, but his contribution could stop them from falling to a 2-1 defeat against second-placed Sevilla.
An entertaining contest saw Ernesto Javier Chevanton come off the bench to score his side's winner, and his first goal for Sevilla, with an acrobatic scissor kick in the 77th minute.
Beckham, who completed 90 minutes, opened the scoring in the 13th minute when his free-kick from the left evaded Andres Palop and dipped in under his far post.
Sevilla were, though, undaunted and deservedly drew level just a few minutes later when the impressive Fredi Kanoute notched his 11th goal of the campaign.
Both sides had a plethora of chances in what was fine game, but in the end, it was Chevanton that stole the plaudits and a crucial three points for his side.
