Barcelona slumped to a rare defeat to city rivals Espanyol on Saturday night.
Barcelona missed the chance to return to the top of the Liga table after slumping to a rare defeat to city rivals Espanyol.
Barca came desperately close to opening the scoring when Ronaldinho's pin-point free-kick was touched onto the bar by Carlos Kameni.
Espanyol responded and made the breakthrough after 31 minutes when Luis Garcia was on hand to guide home after great work by Raul Tamudo down the left.
Tamudo nearly teed up a second for Espanyol, but Rufete was inches from connecting with the Espanyol striker's left-wing cross.
Barcelona struck back after the interval when half-time substitute Javier Saviola got the better of Francisco Chica before lashing home past Kameni.
However, it proved a false dawn and Espanyol were soon back in front when Tamudo gleefully headed home Sergio Sanchez's cross unmarked in the middle.
Espanyol should have made the game safe, but Walter Pandiani firstly sent a left-footed wide before his downwards header struck the crossbar.
Although the former Birmingham City striker's misses did not prove costly as Espanyol claimed an injury-time third thanks to Rufete's close-range strike.
Valencia have moved third in La Liga after putting Levante to the sword in the second half at the Mestalla.
After a goalless first half the home side finally made the breakthrough thanks to Hugo Viana's opener.
Fernando Morientes swiftly doubled their lead with Roberto Ayala making sure of the points after 79 minutes.
The win moves Che above Real Madrid, who tackle Real Zaragoza on Sunday.
