A 50th minute own goal from Gabriel Schurrer was enough to seal the win for Betis against The Canary Island club and send them to the top of the league, with Deportivo La Coruna and Celta Vigo playing in the later game.
Villarreal moved level on points with Betis as they also claimed a 1-0 victory away at Mallorca. Martin Palermo got the goal after just 13 minutes and that proved to be enough to elevate Villarreal up the table.
The only other goal of the night came as Osasuna grabbed their second win of the season with a 1-0 home win over Sevilla thanks to a 75th minute strike from former Coventry City striker John Aloisi.
Elsewhere, Tenerife's home match with Zaragoza and Alaves's trip to Valencia both ended in scoreless draws.
