Espanyol lost 1-0 away at Lleida thanks to a goal a minute into extra-time from Nakor whilst Real Sociedad went down 2-1 at Hospitalet and Betis' city rivals Sevilla were beaten by the same scoreline at Ciudad de Murcia
Real Madrid survived a potentially tricky trip to Pajara and returned the best result of the night for the top teams, with an emphatic 4-0 win, thanks largely to a Guti hat-trick, underused Brazilian Savio got the fourth.
The Betis game ended 1-1 after Marcelino had given Cueta the lead just before the half-hour, only for Joey Gudjonsson to equalise five minutes into the second period and the scores remained locked together at the end of normal time. However, it was the minnows that showed more desire to win in extra-time and De Pedro gave them the lead in the 103rd-minute.
The killer goal came on the stroke of half-time in extra-time, as Puli got his first of the evening and the same player made it 4-1 in the 117th-minute.
Meanwhile in Lanzarote, Tenerife found themselves two goals down in the first 19 minutes through Fali (4) and Maciot and although Esteban Fuertes gave them hope midway through the first-half, Arrollo's strike on the stroke of half-time gave them little chance of getting back into the match.
A brace by Maciot (60, 84) completed the scoring as the home side ran riot.
Zarate's strike eight minutes from time condemned Sevilla to defeat after they had fortuitously got back into the game through an Arias own goal. Idiaquez had given Ciudad an early lead in just the second-minute and it seemed this would be enough to send them through.
The Madrid derby between Atletico and Rayo Vallecano ended in a surprise win for the visitors, who recorded their first win under new coach Gregorio Manzano.
Fernando Torres put Atletico 1-0 up but a Pablo Sanz penalty levelled matters and Bolo put Rayo ahead for good in the 33rd-minute. The enigmatic forward got his second of the game in the 64th-minute to condemn the rojiblancos, who are taking the Segunda Liga by storm, to defeat.
Celta's brilliant comeback saw them avoid being squeezed out by Lemona. The home side took a 2-0 lead in just 18 minutes as Ruben Ruiz capped a brilliant opening period with a brace.
However, fitness told in the end and goals in the last 20 minutes through Guidino Doriva, Catanha and Edu saw the Galician side through 3-2.
Real Zaragoza were held to a scoreless draw by Logrones and were dispatched 5-4 on penalties in one of the night's other shock results.
Joaquin Rufete got the only goal of the game as Valencia scraped past Novelda 1-0, whilst Las Palmas required a last-minute penalty from Marcos Sequeiros to edge past Vecindario 2-1.
Bilbao only made their game safe in injury-time against Amurrio, with Tiko getting the all-important third goal. David Karanka had given Athletic the lead on the half-hour, only for Achabal to equalise six minutes later. Santiago Ezquerro's strike three minutes from the break sent the Primera Liga side into the lead but the gutsy hosts almost managed to pull off a deserved draw.
Malaga finally beat off a determined Cadiz side 2-1, whilst Martin Palermo got the eventual winner for Villarreal as they beat Getafe by the same score. Mallorca got a 1-0 win over Diter Zafra thanks to Veljko Paunovic's fourth-minute strike.
The game between Valladolid and Ourense was abandoned with the score at 1-1.
