Capi struck four minutes before the interval to send Betis to within two points of leaders Valencia.
Celta Vigo moved back into the Champions League places on goal difference but they had to settle for a scoreless draw at home to Malaga.
At the opposite end of the table Rayo Vallecano won the crunch battle of the bottom sides as they beat Tenerife 2-0.
Elvir Bolic bagged a brace in the closing 20 minutes of the fraught fixture that leaves Tenerife three points adrift at the foot of La Liga.
In the mid-table tussle between Osasuna and Espanyol, the points were somewhat predictably shared.
Raul Tamudo fired Espanyol ahead on 19 minutes but Sabino netted on 68 minutes to secure a point for the hosts.
Real Zaragoza handed themselves valuable breathing space at the wrong end of the table as Roberto Acuna's 76th minute effort plunged Mallorca into the bottom three.
Real Sociedad dented Sevilla's European aspirations, and boosted their own survival hopes, with a 1-0 triumph at Sanchez Pizjuan courtesy of Oscar de Paula's 69th minute winner.
It was honours even in the Canary Islands as Las Palmas drew 1-1 with Valladolid. Fernando Sales put the visitors ahead on 49 minutes but Orlando smashed an equaliser on 63 minutes.
