Van der Vaart opened the scoring just 10 minutes and the second arrived just after the hour mark through Piotr Trochowski.
Werder Bremen remain well placed in third after they sealed a 2-1 success over Bayer Leverkusen at The Weser Stadion.

FSV Mainz' draw with Borussia Dortmund meant they were spared going to the bottom of the pile - although they will be disappointed not to have won.
Mohamed Zidan put the home side ahead from the penalty spot on the hour mark, but in the final minute they lost the lead as Christoph Metzelder levelled.
Borussia Monchengladbach climbed into the top half of the table with a 2-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld.
Peer Kluge (32) and Oliver Neuville (68) fired him in each half to seal all three points.
