Barcelona's win over Real Zaragoza on Saturday threw down the gauntlet to their fierce rivals, but Real failed to rise to the challenge.
Things did look promising when Real headed into the interval a goal to the good after Sergio Ramos headed in David Beckham's free kick.
But Ramos then conceded a 52nd minute penalty after a tug on Antonio Tuni. Leonardo Pisculichi showed great composure to score from 12 yards.
Mallorca then stunned Real by nicking a winner 10 minutes from time when Juan Arango sprinted clear, rounded Iker Casillas and tucked the ball into the net.
Valencia also failed to make significant inroads into Barcelona's lead at the top of La Liga after a 1-1 draw with Getafe.
The Che are on a lengthy unbeaten run and their quest for a win to keep tabs on Barca was boosted when Getafe had Anibal Matellan sent off on 65 minutes.
David Navarro then put Valencia ahead on 77 minutes, but Getafe substitute Nano earned the visitors a point three minutes from time.
Deportivo La Coruna revived their prospects of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after a 2-1 win at fourth-placed Osasuna.
Bernardo Romeo gave Osasuna the lead just before half time, but goals from Sergio and substitute Diego Tristan handed Depor the points.
Real Betis climbed out of the relegation zone after a 2-0 win at home moved them level on points with the vanquished Real Sociedad.
Dani put Betis ahead just past the half hour mark and Robert wrapped up the win deep into injury time.
Athletic Bilbao are also in a battle to beat the drop and they took the lead at home to Villarreal on 41 minutes through Aritz Aduritz.
Diego Forlan levelled before half time, while Bilbao's Pablo Orbaiz missed a penalty late in the second half.
Espanyol are also keeping an eye on the drop zone, but they hammered Sevilla 5-0, with Fredson scoring after just five minutes.
Pablo Zabaleta netted early in the second half, before Luis Garcia scored a hat-trick, while Sevilla had Javi Navarro sent off.
Celta Vigo boosted their European aspirations with a 2-0 success at home to struggling Cadiz.
Pablo Contreras broke the deadlock on 37 minutes and David Silva killed off Cadiz with the second goal on 73 minutes.
Racing Santander twice came from behind to force a 2-2 draw at Alaves, who took the lead through Nene on nine minutes.
John Aloisi restored that advantage, after Mauricio Pinilla had levelled with a penalty, but Racing claimed a point through substitute Wilfried Dalmat.
