Celta Vigo claimed an impressive 2-0 win over fourth placed Osasuna.
Osasuna's chances of claiming a UEFA Champions League spot were handed a real blow following a 2-0 defeat at Celta Vigo.
One of this season's surprise packages, Osasuna were never at their best and fell to Celta goals delivered by Fernando Baiano and Nestor Cannobio in the fourth and 71st minute respectively.
Real Zaragoza were in excellent form on their travels to Real Sociedad as they returned from the Basque region with a 3-1 success.
Sociedad had been given the ideal start through Kahveci Nihat's opener in only the ninth minute but in the second period, Zaragoza were by far the stronger.
Ewerthon grabbed a brace (58 & 68), with the striker's strikes sandwiching an own goal from Igor Jauregui on the hour mark.
Sevilla beat Athletic Bilbao despite having Ivica Dragutinovic sent-off in the first half for a deliberate handball.
Enzo Marseca gave Sevilla the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute but within four minutes, Bilbao were level courtesy of Aritz Aduritz's volley.
Despite being numerically at a disadvantage, Sevilla stole the points on the hour mark when Fredi Kanoute struck a winner.
Getafe claimed a 1-0 over Real Betis on home soil as Veljko Paunovic scored the game's only goal in the 13th minute.
Racing Santander and Real Mallorca failed to find a goal between them as they played out a 0-0 stalemate.
In Sunday's late game, Valencia were frustrated on their travels to Malaga, with another 0-0 drawing ensuing.
