Christian Poulsen was in wistful mood after Sevilla fluffed the chance to go five points clear at the top of La Liga.
After reigning champions Barcelona lost 3-1 to Espanyol on Saturday, leaders Sevilla could have stretched the gap by beating Mallorca on Sunday.
But the table-toppers suffered a first home defeat of the season after Mallorca came from behind to win 2-1.
Danish midfielder Poulsen accepts the setback keeps the title race interesting, but was left to rue the failure to extend Sevilla's lead.
"It wasn't a particularly good match from our part," Poulsen told BT. "Our game didn't click as it usually does.
"Of course, we knew that Barcelona had lost the day before, but I wouldn't say that is the reason why we didn't play well.
"But it is, of course, something we regret.
"The top sides haven't got many points in the New Year, whilst the sides behind have won.
"It's starting to become tight at the top. That is, of course, exciting for the spectators, but not for us."
