A late penalty from substitute Miguel Fernando gave Valladolid a valuable point and thwart Real's chances of opening up a four-point lead at the top of the Primera Liga.
The home side survived an early penalty appeal from Raul to open the scoring after only three minutes through Jose Caminero.
Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas conceded a corner when he came racing out to block an effort from Fernando Sales and former Atletico Madrid striker Caminero made it 1-0 from the corner.
Caminero, who scored last week against Barcelona, stole a yard on Real captain Fernando Hierro to head the ball into the net, despite Casillas getting his fingertips to the ball.
The European Champions nearly equalised just five minutes later when Luis Figo released Michel Salgado down the right and his cross found Fernando Morientes who thumped his header against the bar with Valladolid keeper Bazzarri beaten.
The home side were mainly playing on the counter-attack and Morientes had a chance to level the scores on 22 minutes. He was put through by a great ball from Raul but hit his left-foot shot just inches wide from the edge of the box.
Real hit a controversial equaliser with virtually the last kick of the half through Brazilian Roberto Carlos. He struck a 25-yard free-kick that took a wicked deflection off a defender to wrong-foot the keeper and make it 1-1.
The home players and fans where furious at the referee who played two minutes of stoppage time when the fourth official had only indicated one.
Real came flying out of the blocks after the interval and nearly went ahead when Raul went close just a minutes into the half.
He turned superbly at the edge of the box and hit a well-struck shot that former Real keeper Bazzarri did well to keep out and concede the corner.
Five minutes later, Madrid did take the lead when Morientes scored his fourth goal of the season.
Figo was fouled on the right edge of the area and got up quickly to take the free kick which was flicked in at the near post by Morientes who got in front of two defenders to make it 2-1.
The homes side managed to grab an equaliser 14 minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Miguel Fernando by Albert Celades.
Fernando picked himself up and calmly slotted home the spot kick by sending Casillas the wrong way to make it 2-2.
A frantic last five minutes saw chances for both sides, the best of which came for the home side in stoppage time. Substitute Ivan Kaviedes broke through the middle and beat Hierro but his shot was blocked by the right-foot of Casillas.
