Saez requests Hierro's return

INAKI SAEZ, Spain's new team manager will ask Real Madrid veteran Fernando Hierro to return to the national fold following the 1-1 draw with Hungary on Wednesday.

A dearth of decent central defenders for the national team has seen Saez plead for Hierro's return, although this would just be a short-term fix.

It was obvious to observers at the World Cup that Spain would face problems in the very near future, with Hierro and Miguel Angel Nadal their central defence pairing, both in their mid-thirties.

Despite the duo announcing their retirement at the end of the World Cup, Saez has asked that Hierro reconsider his decision.

This came as a surprise to Hierro at a press conference on Friday and he stated he would hold another on Monday to discuss various subjects.

New Spanish captain and Hierro's Real colleague Raul said: "It must be him (Hierro) that responds.

"Although I believe that he left things very clear in Korea."

It is believed that Saez was not impressed with the defending during Spain's draw with Hungary and is hoping to persuade Hierro to stay until he the 2004 European Championships.
