The fabulously engineered goal, which saw Zidane cruise past two players before playing a one-two with Ronaldo and curling home was a moment of magic in a straightforward game.
Real Madrid were dominating when Fernando shocked the Bernabeu crowd with a Betis goal against the run of play.
However, hopes of clinging onto the lead were ended when Raul pounced a minute before the break to level.
The goal demoralised Betis, and they soon found themselves behind after the break when the Madrid side received a penalty - duly converted by Luis Figo.
Zidane's goal then ended the match as a spectacle - with showboating from the hosts filling out the match until the late fourth goal.
Ronaldo was felled after rounding the goalkeeper, and stepped up himself to convert at the second attempt, after Toni Prats had saved his original effort.
In the night's other match, Jorge Lopes scored the only goal of the game to seal a victory for Villarreal against Real Valladolid.
Lopez notched the winner just 19 minutes in, as Valladolid sealed a tight win.
Villarreal have been looking over their shoulder at the relegation quagmire, and will be hugely relieved to put more space between themselves and the bottom sides.
Valladolid, on the other had, will feel that they will need to embark on a winning run to have any chance of sealing a European qualifying berth.
