The Seville-based club are eager to sign the highly-rated Postiga and are desperately trying to persuade Porto to cash in on the young marksman.
But if Betis's sweet-talking proves fruitless, they will switch their attentions to Portillo, who has been unable to command a regular place in the star-studded Real team.
Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera is aware that Real are keen to offload either Portillo or Fernando Morientes during the summer and is aiming to use this knowledge to his advantage.
Lopera has been calculating the figures in preparation for submitting a bid to the Santiago Bernabeu powerbrokers.
One route Lopera has been exploring with regards to the possible capture of Portillo is replicating the deal which took Fernando to Betis from the Spanish capital last summer.
Fernando joined Betis in a é¼4.2 million switch but part of the deal gave Real first option to buy the midfielder back, and it is believed Lopera would propose a similar clause to snare Portillo.
Betis coach Victor Fernandez wants Postiga in his ranks but has Portillo as an alternative and has also been linked with Aston Villa misfit Juan Pablo Angel.
