Valery Karpin netted the only goal of the game on 64 minutes to give Sociedad the priceless three points against a lacklustre Real Madrid.
Real Sociedad doiminated the first half with Turkish striker Nihat Kaveci missed a golden chance on the half hour after Iker Casillas missed a cross into the box.
Real Madrid improved in the second half and only a fine reaction save from Alberto denied Raul giving the visitors the lead on 49 minutes.
Karpin grabbed the winner on 64 minutes firing home from close-range after Casillas flapped at a cross from Nihat with the ball falling invitingly for Karpin.
Darko Kovacevic almost doubled the lead eight minutes from time with a header from a corner, but Michel Salgado was on hand to clear the ball off his own line.
Valencia took spot as Jorge Lopez grabbed the all-important winning goal for them on nine minutes from the penalty spot after Pablo Aimar was felled in the box.
Valencia were forced to hold on for the victory as Albacete piled forward, but they could not find a way past Santiago Canizares.
Celta Vigo climbed out of the bottom three with an impressive 4-2 win over Mallorca.
Mallorca took the lead on 12 minutes with Arnold Bruggink finding the net, but the lead was short-lived as Jose Ignacio levelled three minutes later.
Bruggink restored the home side's lead right on the stroke of half time, but Celta again fought back and drew level through Jesus Jesuli on 71 minutes.
Celta took the lead for the first time five minutes from time with Peter Luccin converting from the penalty spot and former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic wrapped up the win with the fourth in stoppage time.
