Real Madrid hung on to claim a 1-1 draw in the derby with Atletico Madrid after playing the final stages with 10 men.
Fabio Cannavaro was sent off for a second yellow card on 83 minutes after Gonzalo Higuain had drawn Real level following Fernando Torres' first-half goal.
Atletico dominated the first half and took the lead on 11 minutes when Torres collected a Luciano Galletti pass to drill a low shot beyond Iker Casillas for his first goal against Real.
Just four minutes later and Atletico should have been 2-0 up, only for Luis Perea to have a goal wrongly chalked off for offside.
A sweeping free-kick evaded everyone before bouncing off the post and into the path of Perea to finish, yet he was deemed to be offside. A penalty could also have been awarded as Sergio Aguero was tugged back by Emerson.
Higuain forced Leo Franco into a routine save as Real struggled for momentum before Casillas made a stunning save to turn away Galletti's left-footed drive.
Late in the first half, Cannavaro shot tamely at Franco, while at the opposite end, Perea put a free header wide of the target.
The second half was more even and Real drew level on 62 minutes when substitute Antonio Cassano played a clever pass in behind the defence and Higuain showed great strength before finishing coolly for his first goal for the club.
Atletico looked more likely to claim a winner and substitute Mista saw his close-range header beaten out by Casillas.
With seven minutes left, Cannavaro was dismissed for collecting a second booking and Casillas saved smartly with his legs from Aguero in the last minute.
Meanwhile, Deportivo La Coruna moved into the top half of the table as Javier Arizmendi's 28th minute goal secured a 1-0 win at struggling Real Sociedad.
