Roberto Carlos has blamed the pitch for the mistake that led to Bayern Munich going ahead.
Real Madrid defender Roberto Carlos has blamed the pitch for the mistake that led to Bayern Munich taking the lead after 10 seconds in their UEFA Champions League clash.
The 33-year-old lost control of the ball to Bayern winger Hasan Salihamidzic after he received a pass from Fernando Gago just after kick-off that led to the Bundesliga side scoring.
Salihamidzic ran down the right flank to provide the pass to Roy Makaay who netted the opener.
"The ball bobbled off the surface and bounced just in front of me," the Brazilian told Marca. "The pitch wasn't in good condition and it was a real shame.
"We didn't concede the goal because of a lack of concentration, it was because the ball bobbled when I got it."
Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatovic, however, pointed the finger at the team's poor focus for the goal.
Makaay's strike is the fastest scored in a Champions League match, beating the previous record set by Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva who netted after 20 seconds against PSV Eindhoven in September 2002.
"We broke another record by conceding the quickest goal in the Champions League," Mijatovic said after the tie. "We didn't start the match with the right levels of concentration and that surprised me."
