Fernando Morientes would love to score against Real Madrid on Saturday.
Fernando Morientes has revealed that he would love to score against his former club when Valencia meet Real Madrid in the Bernabeu this weekend.The Spanish international striker spent eight years with los Merengues, but will put that behind him as he looks to help his current side improve their title chances.
"It is a stadium that I have a lot of affection for," he said. "I scored a lot of goals in the white of Madrid there and it would be very special if I now did that with Valencia."
With both Madrid and los Che battling to catch league leaders Barcelona, Morientes recognised that the encounter was vital for either side.
In order to secure victory, the former Liverpool striker has a plan to silence the home supporters in order to add more pressure on Fabio Capello's team.
"This game is more than about three points," he said in a press conference at Valencia's training ground on Thursday. "They are a rival that must be considered a candidate for the title.
"They are not used to dropping so many points and to not have the ball. The criticism will only create doubt and uncertainty.
"That will benefit us. It will be important for us to control the game in the first 20 minutes so that the fans begin to become unsettled and we can then use that.
"The worst thing is that they lost against Racing last weekend and I think that they will now want to come out and prove something against us."
Following the two late penalties and two sendings offs that Madrid incurred in the game against Racing, the talk has been all about the referee in that game.
Morientes believes that now is the time to stop looking back and that attention should turn to the game on Saturday evening.
"It is not good that there has been so much talk about referees, because they should not be the focus of attention," he continued.
"The nearer this game becomes the happier everyone will be and the subject should change to consider what will happen when these two great sides play each other."
Valencia slipped out of the top four before returning last weekend and Morientes is keen for the club to secure a top four spot before considering aiming for the title.
"We will have to see what happens, but we want to be as close to first and as far from fifth place as possible," he stated.
"The aim of the team at the moment is to qualify for the Champions League and then we shall see in the final few matches whether we are in contention for the championship or not."
