The Austrian side took the lead in front of their own supporters through Sigurd Rushfeldt, only for the influential Savio to equalise with quarter of an hour to go.
The Spanish side took the early initiative and nearly opened the scoring after just eight minutes, but David Villa's shot flew just wide.
Further chances followed and only a fantastic diving save from Vienna keeper Joseph Didulica could prevent Fernando Soriano's fine volley.
However the home team begun to assert themselves as the half progressed, and Norwegian international Rushfeldt announced his presence in the game by going close with a 25-yard volley .
However the forward did not have to wait long before making an impact, as he took the ball down superbly on the edge of the box and fired a great shot over Luis Garcia on 32 minutes.
After the break Vienna continued to create chances, and Ivica Vastic was culpable of missing a golden opportunity to extend their impressive home record in the Uefa Cup as he side-footed over from close range.
Zaragoza capitalised on the miss as former Real Madrid winger Savio topped his impressive performance with a goal on 74 minutes.
After driving into the box, the Brazilian struck a hard shot that flew past Didulica and went in off the far post.
The home side were anxious to score again to take an advantage into the second leg, but their best chance to do so was saved after Libor Sionko's shot was deflected to Luis Garcia.
Dosunmu also failed to convert in the dying seconds as the Liga outfit played out the final minutes to secure the stalemate.
