Valencia dominated long periods of the game at the Estadio Nuevo Jose Zorrilla but were beaten by a single goal from Antonio Lopez.
"They took advantage of their only real opportunity and, like in boxing, the winner is not the one who hits most but the one who causes real damage," opined the Che manager.
"The goal changed the way Valladolid played, with the score in their favour they slowed the game down."
Benitez went on to concede that it had been 'unthinkable' his side had not managed to score in a game in which they had created so many chances, but remained determined that the setback would not affect his players ahead of Tuesday's crucial Champions League clash with Internazionale.
"I hope that this defeat will not influence the decisive match with Inter on Tuesday," he said.
"We can't fail for our fans who deserve so much."
