Reports in the Spanish press continue to link Villarreal with Marco Materazzi.
Reports in the Spanish press continue to link Villarreal with a summer swoop for Internazionale defender Marco Materazzi.
The 32-year-old former Everton stopper has reportedly already met Villarreal's general director Jose Manuel Llaneza, in a meeting that was also attended by his agent.
Whilst the deal has been put on hold until the summer, it is thought the initial discussions were positive and that personal terms could be concurred in the summer.
Villarreal disposed of Internazionale in a UEFA Champions League quarter final tie on Tuesday and the Spanish outfit now look to be an attractive club to join.
The club are believed to be chasing both Real Sociedad's Nihat Kahveci and Arsenal's Robert Pires as they begin preparations for next season.
Meanwhile, coach Manuel Pellegrini has spoken of his utmost confidence that his side would eliminate the more fancied Inter in midweek.
Pellegrini insists his side were destined to progress and he also concedes that he does not have a preference over whether it is Juventus or Arsenal that await in the next round.
"We were convinced that we were going to qualify to the next stage,'' said Pellegrini.
''I never thought of the chance of being knocked out of the competition at this stage because I saw that the team was satisfied with what they had done in the first match in Italy.
''We had seen and read in many parts of the press that we were okay with what we had done until now, but the truth is that this team wants more.
"I think that we controlled Inter. It was very important not to concede and we managed to control that.
"The first half was very tight but I think that in the second we deserved to score more than a goal.
"About our next rival, personally it's the same for me to play against Arsenal or Juventus. We all know what both teams are, so I don't prefer one over the other.''
