Valencia raised the curtain on the new La Liga season with a 2-1 win over Real Betis.
Valencia raised the curtain on the 2006/07 Spanish Primera Liga season with a 2-1 home win over Real Betis.
A packed Mestalla saw a new-look Valencia side claim the lead on 33 minutes after a bright opening to the late Saturday evening contest.
Two former Premiership players were involved in the goal, as former Arsenal midfielder Edu picked out an unmarked Fernando Morientes in the Betis box with a fine pass.
The former Real Madrid and Liverpool striker took the ball comfortably before hammering a right-foot strike past Betis goalkeeper Antonio Doblas for a one-goal lead at the break.
The Andalucian visitors had offered little in terms of attacking prowess, but still claimed an equaliser against the run of play eight minutes after the restart.
Enrique Romero's fine cross from the right found Francisco Xisco and his superb near-post header beat Valencia goalkeeper Santiago Canizares to make it 1-1.
The scoreline lasted eight minutes, as youngster Raul Albiol converted a loose ball in the Betis box after the visitors failed to deal with a corner from the left.
Los Che could have had more goals before the end through David Villa and Morientes, but the result was enough to secure Valencia's first win of the season on opening night.
