The highly-rated forward has attracted a wealth of interest across Europe with Manchester United and Atletico's city rivals, Real, also charting his progress.
But it would appear Atletico have made a move to capture the Portuguese Under-21 international ahead of their transfer market adversaries.
Contact between the two clubs is believed to have resumed with Atletico keen to capture Ronaldo ahead of next season.
Luis Aragones' side had also been interested in Ronaldo's Sporting team-mates Ricardo Quaresma (pictured) and Jardel.
However, Atletico have shelved a bid for the Brazilian striker and concede Manchester United are firm favourites to land Quaresma.
Atletico are also aiming to bolster their defence in addition to reinforcing their forward line, with Valladolid stopper Mario on their shopping list.
Mario will miss the remaining weeks of the campaign through injury as Atletico seek to exercise their purchase option for the centre half.
The capital club have also spoken to Albacete regarding Pablo, although a deal is not close to completion while Mallorca's Alvaro Novo has also caught Atletico's attention.
