Depor took a thoroughly-deserved lead after 20 minutes when former Real Madrid star Victor burst away down the right and lashed a shot past young keeper Juan Calatayud.
Malaga were back on level terms before the break, when a left-wing cross was allowed to go across the face of the goal for substitute Manuel Canabal to tap home.
Canabal's touch was not the most convincing of finishes, however Gustavo Munua was already on his way down and was unable to readjust his body to the tame shot.
Despite frantically looking for the all-important winner, Depor were forced to settle for a point and now stay behind Barcelona by a point, having played one more game.
Espanyol climbed out of La Liga drop zone following a crucial 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid at Estadi Montjuic.
Fredson broke the deadlock just after the half hour mark to give Luis Fernandez and the home side real hope of avoiding the drop.
The Barcelona-based outfit finished the stronger and two goals in the final ten minutes from Claudiu Raducanu completed an exciting finish.
There was still time for Spain international striker Fernando Torres to net a consolation for the capital visitors.
