Atletico Madrid have set their sights on Martin Petrov of Wolfsburg.Spanish La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid have confirmed that they are hoping to sign Martin Petrov from Wolfsburg.
Spanish media reports had revealed Madrid's interest in the Bulgarian international midfielder earlier this week and it appears a deal could be close.
"Petrov is a talented player. He is on our list and could well be coming to us," Atletico director of sport Toni Munoz told Marca.
Dead-ball specialist Petrov, who normally operates on the left wing, is contracted to the VW Arena outfit until June 2007, but a clause in his contract would allow him to leave the Wolves for a fee of é¼7 million.
Atletico are believed to have switched their sights to the Bulgarian after top target Ze Roberto of Bayern Munich revealed he was unlikely to move to Madrid.
Petrov has recently stressed his desire to leave Wolfsburg after they failed to qualify for Europe.
However, Atletico - who also failed to secure European football next term - could face competition for the player's signature from Schalke.
