Athletic Bilbao eased their relegation worries by claiming a 1-0 win over Getafe albeit in controversial circumstances.
With little to separate either side the breakthrough did not arrive until the 74th minute when referee Evaristo Leira pointed to the penalty spot after Anibal Matellan's push on Francisco Yeste.
Matellan and Getafe pleaded their innocence but to no avail and Pablo Orbaiz cooly sent goalkeeper Juan Calatayud the wrong way from 12 yards.
The three points sees the Basque side climb out of the relegation zone and up to 16th.
Cadiz and Racing Santander shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening.
After a goalless first half Felipe Melo's 66th minute penalty appeared to set the visitors on the way to three points.
However, to the relief of home supporters Raul Lopez was on hand to level the scores just ten minutes later.
The point sees Santander move up a place to 11th with Cadiz also climbing up to 14th.
In the day's late kick off Atletico Madrid beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-2 at the Vicente Calderon.
The home side were rewarded for the more enterprising first half display by claiming a 33rd minute lead.
Maxi Rodriguez volleyed home well after Martin Petrov's somewhat unintentional cross had left Jose Molina in the Depor goal floundering.
Any thoughts that it would turn into a comfortable evening for the hosts were dispelled just two minutes into the second half when Ruben Castro's free-kick avoided everyone in the Atletico box and sneaked past Leo Franco.
If Atletico needed inspiration then Antonio Lopez provided it by arching a sublime free kick into the top right hand corner to leave Molina a virtual bystander and re-establish the home side's lead.
Once again Depor struck back to equalise with Joan Capdevila nodding home from close range following a flick-on at a corner to make it two apiece just four minutes later.
However, Rodriguez won the game with his second of the night nine minutes from time, a cheeky first-time volley flicked over Molina from another Petrov cross.
