Christian Abbiati says Demetrio Albertini and Christian Vieri convinced him to join Atletico.Christian Abbiati has revealed that Demetrio Albertini and Christian Vieri convinced him to join Atletico Madrid, and he is now relishing playing in Spain.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper sought the advice of his former Milan team-mates as both have tasted life at Vicente Calderon.
After being told to make the move, Abbiati signed a one-year loan deal with Atletico and could make the switch permanent next summer.
"I talked to Vieri and Albertini first, and both had very good things to say about Atletico Madrid and they helped me to take the decision," Abbiati told As.
"They basically convinced me.
"I am delighted to be here and want to thank the club for having confidence in me.
"I now have to prove myself in the team. I have come here to give my experience and to play regularly."
Abbiati spent last season on loan at Torino and was again told that he was surplus to requirements after returning to Milan at the end of the season.
Now he will go head-to-head with Atletico No.1 Leo Franco to earn a place in Javier Aguirre's side next term.
He added: "Over the past year I have seen several of their games and Leo is a good goalkeeper."
