The Seville-based club were understood to have offered their manager a two-year deal last week but he has merely penned terms for next season.
Ferrer was rewarded with a deal after fulfilling certain criteria which triggered a clause in his contract.
He has secured European football for the club next season, with the only issue to be determined the competition which Betis will play in.
They currently sit in the fourth UEFA Champions League berth, with one game left to play, while they are also in the Copa del Rey final.
Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera confirmed Ferrer has inked his new terms and did not exclude the possibility of extending the deal over the next few months.
"It is possible that, during the season, Serra will sign for more years," said Lopera.
The Betis supremo also revealed that he has struck an accord to sign two players in the summer, although he shied away from unmasking their identities.
He added: "I am not naming them but they are two excellent players."
It is understood that the players in question are Malaga midfielder Miguel Angel and Racing Santander winger Mario Regueiro, who was previously linked to Manchester United.
