La Liga Round-Up

Villarreal have relegated Levante following a 4-1 win at El Madrigal.

Villarreal have secured third spot in La Liga following a 4-1 win over Levante that condemns them to relegation after just one year in Spain's top flight.

Levante had Mallorca in the drop zone at one stage when Gustavo Reggi headed the visitors in front at El Madrigal but that was as good as it got.

Two goals just before half-time from Josico and Diego Forlan turned around the contest within the space of five minutes.

Forlan moved clear at the top of the Liga scoring charts when he netted his second late on to condemn Levante to the Segunda Liga and secure the top scorer award with 25 goals for the season.

To add insult to injury Villarreal added a fourth deep into injury time when Forlan crossed for former Birmingham City striker Luciano Figueroa to score.

With Levante crashing away from home, Mallorca secured their top-flight status with a 1-1 at home to Real Betis to complete a remarkable escape from the drop.

Marcos Assancao's superb free-kick had Betis in front, but Guillermo Pereyra's late headed goal rescued a share of the spoils.

Espanyol leapfrogged Sevilla into fifth following a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao leaving the Catalans with a Uefa Cup spot.

Goals either side of half-time from Toni Velamazan and defender Albert Lopo settled the contest giving Espanyol European football next term.

Sevilla could have beaten Espanyol to fifth but were stunned at home 2-0 by Malaga.

Duda put the Costa Del Sol side ahead late on before Fernando Baiano settled the game in injury time.

A Richard Nunes brace salvaged a 2-2 draw for Atletico Madrid at home to Getafe.

David Cubillo's penalty put the visitors in front with Nunes' first levelling matters just after half-time.

Gheorghe Craioveanu restored Getafe's advantage, but Nunes' second in injury time secured a share of the spoils.

Valencia finished seventh in the Liga with Pablo Aimar's solitary goal giving the side a 1-0 success over Osasuna.

Relegated Numancia ended their disappointing season with a 1-1 draw against Deportivo La Coruna.

Luis Tevenet's spot-kick had the home side in front before Juanpa's own goal spoiled the home fans' party.

The home side took lead through Luis Tevenet's penalty, however Juanpa's own goal meant the contest finished all-square.

Racing Santander finished the Liga season on a high note following a 1-0 win over relegated Albacete.

David Aganzo netted the only goal of the game with the crucial strike arriving after just 33 minutes.
