Goals from Gerard Escoda and Javier Gracia gave the home side a 2-0 half time lead and Espanyol went further behind when Navas headed into his own net.
Villarreal swarmed all over the Catalan side, who had their keeper Argenso to thank for making a number of outstanding saves to deny Villarreal from racking up a cricket score.
In the final minute, Martin Palermo (pictured) completed the rout when he got in front of his defender to head home.
The win keeps Villarreal's hopes of qualifying for the Uefa Cup alive, but they need to rely on Barcelona winning the Kings Cup and further results from tomorrow's La Liga fixtures to take a European place, after finishing in seventh.
Relegated Numancia ended their season on a high note with a 2-1 win against Uefa Cup finalists Alaves.
Diego Jaume gave the home side the lead after 18 minutes, but goal machine Javi Moreno levelled the scores after half-an-hour.
However, Numancia secured the points two minutes later when Ivan Perez slotted home.
Athletic Bilbao must have had their minds on their summer vacation as they were trounced 3-0 by Racing Santander.
Three goals in the opening 20 minutes secured the points for Racing, who took their foot off the pedal for the remainder of the match.
Regueiro scored twice for the home side and Mazzoni wrapped up the points with the third.
