The 31-year-old Frenchman's contract at Ennio Tardini had come to and end and he had been weighing up his options after attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.
The World Cup winner had contact with Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland in England, along with Torino and Olympiakos, but had plumped for a move to Spain.
He has signed a two-year deal with the Barcelona outfit, with an option for a further year after that, and was glad to be moving to La Liga.
"I am happy to move to La Liga," said the Frenchman after completing a medical. "It is a league that gets the upper hand in football for some years now.
"It is a very serious club, with realistic ambitions, that really want to build a good team.
"I will keep an excellent remembrance of Parma, where I discovered Lilian Thuram. But since his departure for Juventus, it was a little different."
Espanyol continue to look to Italy for further signings and are casting their eye on Parma's Savo Milosevic and Milan's Cyril Domoraud, who they would like to bring in on loan.
